External solid wall insulation. Residents in the South West could save thousands with a free Green Deal grant.

What is Solid Wall Insulation?

The government Green Deal scheme is offering eligible applicants a free grant towards the complete cost of external wall insulation. Available only for solid-walled properties, it is installed by rendering or cladding the outside of the property. A layer of insulation is fitted between this rendering/ cladding and the original property wall, to prevent heat from escaping.

What are the Benefits?

This insulation would typically cost £8,000-£10,000. With a Green Deal grant, it’s absolutely free. And it offers the following benefits:

• Reduces heat loss by up to 45% and helps you save on bills.
• Improves the appearance of the outside of your property with an external ‘face lift’.
• Protects brickwork and increases the life of the walls.
• Fills cracks and gaps in brickwork, which will reduce drafts.
• Reduces condensation on internal walls and can help prevent damp and mould.
• Provides enhanced soundproofing.
• Unlike internal solid wall insulation, does not reduce the floor space of your property.
• An external job, so minimum disruption to your home life.

Is My Property Suitable For External Wall Insulation?

To qualify, the property must be made from solid walls. If your home has cavity walls – walls composed of two walls with a gap inbetween – it is not suitable for external wall insulation. As a rule of thumb, houses built in the 1920s and earlier are solid wall, while those built after this date are cavity wall.
